The Colt 1877 Lightning 38 and Colt Thunderer 41 double action
revolvers use this birds-head style grip. This is a checkered grip
that looks good in black or ivory colors. The mold was made using
a 100-year old factory grip that had very slight wear. The grips
look appropriate for the age of the gun, not perfect, only
slightly worn looking, like a gun someone carried and took good
care of over the decades. The gutta percha has highlights of brown
and is actually a dark brownish color rather than black.
IMPORTANT: Colt Lightning revolvers were made long
before the invention of CNC machines and high precision
tooling, so they vary from one example to another in the
shape and size of the grip frame. Some of the original
grips have the gun serial number scratched into the backs
because that's the one they actually fit. This means, if you want
the grips to fit YOUR particular gun, you must do one of
two things:
- Carefully compare the specifications given here to
the size of your gun frame, and ONLY order this grip if
your frame is the same or smaller (it is easy to sand
the edges down on a grip, pretty tough to sand them UP!).
- Make an accurate pencil tracing around the grips you
have now that fit your gun, or else make a 3 x 5 index
card template cut to exactly fit your gun frame, and send
the tracing or the template to me so I can compare to
the mold size and shape.
If you do NEITHER of these things, and order this grip
anyway, then if it doesn't fit your gun, you have no one
to blame but yourself. Most people understand that.
But sometimes some misguided soul will ignore the
measurements, check the box that says they are NOT sending
a tracing and will be responsible for the fit, and then
when they get the grip they ordered and (surprise!) it
is too small for their gun, they start ranting and raving
about the "ripoff". It's like they bought a hammer, started
beating themselves in the head with it, and then got mad
at the hardware store because it hurts. But, even so, I usually take pity and replace their grip
if they will send me the tracing they should have sent in
the first place, and pay for the shipping.
Probably only about 1 time in a hundred does this happen,
but I sell so many of these grips that it just seems like
a lot of people who fall into that 1% category. I don't
know what else I can do except point out the simple job
of making the tracing or template and mailing it to me, both
on the main page, on the store front, on this page, and
again on the order confirmation sent automatically when
the order is place.
The point is that 99% of folks ordering grips have no
problem at all because they DO one of those two things.
If you don't, you might not get a grip that fits your gun.
Stay calm. Turn down the rage. Hope still exists. All
it costs is a little more shipping back and forth that
could have been avoided by just sending the tracing
or template in the first place, or comparing the measurements.
