This is a larger version of the Colt 1917 New Service revolver grip, as compared to the 109a factory checkered version also listed here. It allows plenty of room for sanding and fitting perfectly to the wide range of models that use this frame. The smooth grip is also somewhat slimmer in the side to side thickness, which lets the gun ride closer to the body in a belt holster and may fit some people's hands better than the factory grip. It is ideal for pearl effects and medallions (my favorite so far is Aztec Gold with a United States Marines medallion, bringing to mind the "Halls of Montezuma", but all the pearl effects and metallics look great in a large smooth grip like this). If you are custom fitting a grip to any of the Colt Python or Official Police models, any that use this frame size, you can start with this large grip and have plenty of material to match almost any perversion...oops, version... or tolerance of any of them. Colts made at different times underwent somewhat interesting tolerance changes for the same model, making it hard for an aftermarket grip maker to match your particular gun without seeing it first hand. But having an oversided grip and a fingernail sanding board lets you do the trick neatly at home!
